About
The Rockville Centre Electric Department provides the residents of Rockville Centre with low-cost electric power. The average Rockville Centre Electric Bill is consistently less than consumers whose power is supplied by PSEG. RVC Electric is 1 of 50 Municipal and Cooperative (COOP) Electric Utilities in the state of New York.

We have a long term power purchase agreement with the New York Power Authority (NYPA) via the Niagara Falls Hydro Electric Plant and receive about 75% of the annual energy used by residents and businesses through this contract.

We purchase power in the New York State wholesale market via the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) to supplement the NYPA hydropower. Power is supplied to RVC through the NY State bulk power grid and locally on Long Island via the LIPA transmission system.

When the power used by residents and businesses in RVC exceeds the import capacity of the LIPA transmission lines, the Village Power Plant operates a combination of its 7 engine generators to meet the residential and commercial customer summer demands. They will also provide power during electric system emergencies and storms when one or more transmission lines are out of service.

Rockville Centre Electric has joined with other municipal electric systems in New York in a joint action agency that is seeking additional sources of low-cost hydro-power to supplement the allocation the Village currently receives from the New York State Power Authority.

Microgrid Project
The Village has successfully the NY Prize Stage 1 Microgrid Feasibility Study and the Stage 2 Engineering & Business Assessment. The proposed project would include solar on Municipal Buildings, a Demand Side Management Program for residential and small commercial  customers and an Energy Efficiency Program for Commercial customers, along with a substation upgrade to enable increased imports of power from renewable resources including off shore wind as it is deployed off the coast of Long Island.  The project will also include several power plant improvements to increase the resiliency of the system during major storms such as Super Storm Sandy and emergencies like the August 2003 Northeast Blackout. The Village is planning to submit an application for the Stage 3 for the construction grant once it is released.

Demand Side Management Program  & Energy Efficiency Program
Rockville Centre is in the progress of implementing a DSM & EE program with a planned start date of 1st q 2020.  The DSM program will includesmart thermostat rebates for residential and small commercial customers.  The EE program will provide lighting retrofit rebates for commercial  customers.

Electric Vehicle Pilot Program
The Village has purchased and deployed three all electric vehicles (Nissan Leaf). Two are being used by Electric Department Staff and  the third is being used by the Village Mail room staff.  This initiative will help the Village gain experience and knowledge in the use of theses vehicles.

MV & HPS Street Lighting Upgrade Program
The Village has replaced approx. 1300  of the 3300 mercury vapor (MV) and High Pressure Sodium (HPS) street lights with LED street lights.  The Villages estimates savings from this program at 2,936 MWh over the last 6 + years.  Lights are being replaced as part of the Village’s road program as well as when street lightfailures occur. This program is ongoing and will continue into the future.
